California State Legislative Races

2002 General Election

The California State Legislature is made up of two houses -- the Senate and the Assembly. The Senate is the upper house and is comprised of 40 representatives. Each Senator represents about 850,000 people. There are 80 representatives in the Assembly, which is the lower house. Each Assembly member represents about 425,000 people. Senators and Assembly members receive an annual salary of $99,000.

An Assembly member is elected to a two-year term, and is limited to serving three terms. Senators are elected to four-year terms and are limited to serving two terms.

The California Voter Foundation has compiled information on each of the 80 California Assembly races and 20 State Senate seats up this year. (Half of the Senate seats are up for election every two years -- this year the even-numbered seats are up). Follow the links to find a list of the candidates running in each district, their contact information, and links to candidates' web sites, which typically feature campaign literature, endorsement lists, position papers, and information about how to contribute or volunteer.

If you're not sure which legislative districts you live in, you can check your Official Sample Ballot or contact your county election office. Your districts may have changed following the recent redistricting process undertaken by the legislature. To view the new district maps and for information about redistricting, see CVF's district maps page.
