Top Ten Contributors to California Propositions

Top Donors Updated through December 31, 2000!

The tables below identify the contributors who have given the most to support or oppose propositions on California's November, 2000 ballot. Each table also features summaries of total amounts raised and spent, as well as cash on-hand.

The summary figures and top ten donors listed below reflect total contributions received by each ballot measure campaign beginning from the time the campaigns were first organized through December 31, 2000.

These figures were compiled from disclosure reports filed by proposition campaign committees with the Secretary of State. In some cases there is more than one committee supporting or opposing a proposition, and in such cases the summary and top ten lists reflect the combined disclosure figures.

Figures below include cash contributions, loans and non-monetary contributions. Contributor information includes ID numbers for political committees and occupation and employer information for individuals, where available. Any revisions or corrections to the figures in the tables will be noted at the bottom of the page.

For more information about "Follow the Money" and CVF's Top Ten Donors lists, see our October 4th, October 11th and October 31 news releases and the June 20, 2001 edition of CVF-NEWS. To send us your comments and suggestions about this page, please send us an email.

For more information about each proposition, including official summaries, campaign contact information, links to campaign web sites and pro and con arguments, please follow the "more information" links at the bottom of each table, or visit the proposition index page of this voter guide.

Notes:
Yes on Prop 35: This loan was made to the campaign by US Bank with the Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California, the committee that is sponsoring Prop 35, acting as the guarantor of the loan.

Yes on Prop 38: Official reports for the Yes on Prop 38 campaign show expenditures totaling $51 million through 12/31/00, including approximately $21 million in stock donations that were originally reported as non-monetary contributions, but that were converted to cash by the campaign. Generally, non-monetary contributions include in-kind donations to the campaign such as office space or staff time. Non-monetary contributions show up on both the contribution and expenditure side of a disclosure report summary page because they typically represent expenses the campaign did not otherwise have to make. However, in the case of Yes on Prop 38, the non-monetary donation of stock was converted into cash and was then used to pay campaign expenditures. Because the disclosure law requires campaigns to report their non-monetary contributions as expenditures, the result with this committee is the impression that the campaign spent $21 million more than it actually did. CVF's figures have been adjusted from those that appear on the disclosure report to accurately reflect the amount of money raised and spent by the Yes on Prop 38 campaign.

Yes on Prop 39: Official reports for the Yes on Prop 39 campaign show expenditures totaling nearly $39 million through 10/21/00, including approximately $7 million in stock donations that were originally reported as non-monetary contributions, but that were converted to cash by the campaign. Generally, non-monetary contributions include in-kind donations to the campaign such as office space or staff time. Non-monetary contributions show up on both the contribution and expenditure side of a disclosure report summary page because they typically represent expenses the campaign did not otherwise have to make. However, in the case of Yes on Prop 39, the non-monetary donation of stock was converted into cash and was then used to pay campaign expenditures. Because the disclosure law requires campaigns to report their non-monetary contributions as expenditures, the result with this committee is the impression that the campaign spent $7 million more than it actually did. CVF's figures have been adjusted from those that appear on the disclosure report to accurately reflect the amount of money raised and spent by the Yes on Prop 39 campaign.

No on Prop 39: Figures for the No on Proposition 39 campaign include money raised and spent between 2/20/00 and 9/30/00 only, and do not include money raised in the first two reporting periods of the year 2000 (1/1/00 - 2/19/00), during which time this committee was raising and spending money against Proposition 26 on the March 2000 ballot.
