Congress is made up of two houses -- the Senate, and the House of Representatives. California, like all states, has two Senators, and each senator serves a six-year term. One of California's U.S. Senate seats is up for election this year.

Additionally, California has 52 representives in the House - more than any other state. Each member of the House represents about 540,000 people and is elected to a two-year term. There are currently no term limits in effect for federal offices. U.S. Senators earn an annual salary of $140,000, while House members earn $141,300.

This voter guide features information for every California congressional candidate, and can help voters prepare for and participate in the upcoming election. The guide also features links to the candidates' official campaign web sites, where voters can find much more information, such as position papers, endorsements, and information about how to get involved with the campaign.

If you're not sure which congressional district you live in , you can check your Official Sample Ballot to find your district's number, or take a look at CVF's tips to help you determine your districts. Congressional district maps are also available, courtesy of UC Berkeley's Institute for Governmental Studies' Statewide Database. Or if you know the names of the candidates in your area, use our campaign web site index to access their web sites.

For more in-depth information on congressional candidates and their positions on the issues, CVF recommends Smart Voter and Project Vote Smart.
