California Legislative Races

The California State Legislature is made up of two houses -- the Senate and the Assembly. The Senate is the upper house and is comprised of 40 representatives. Each Senator represents about 800,000 people. There are 80 representatives in the Assembly, which is the lower house. Each Assembly member represents about 400,000 people. Senators and Assembly members receive an annual salary of $99,000 plus per diem; legislative leaders receive a slightly higher salary.

An Assembly member is elected to a two-year term, and is limited to serving three terms. Senators are elected to four-year terms and are limited to serving two terms. California's legislative districts are "nested", so that two Assembly districts comprise one Senate district.

The California Voter Foundation has compiled information on each of the 80 California Assembly races and 20 State Senate seats up this year. (Half of the Senate seats are up for election each year -- this year the odd-numbered seats are up). Follow the links to find a list of the candidates running in each district, their party affiliation and contact information. You will also find links here to candidates' web sites, which typically feature campaign literature, endorsement lists, position papers, and information about how to contribute or volunteer.

If you're not sure which legislative districts you live in, you can check your Official Sample Ballot, or take a look at CVF's tips to help you determine your districts. Legislative district maps are also available, courtesy of the Institute for Governmental Studies' Statewide Database. Or if you know the names of the candidates in your area, use our campaign web site index to access their web sites.

For more in-depth information on state legislative candidates and their positions on the issues, CVF recommends Smart Voter and Project Vote Smart.

Contact information for current elected officials is available through CVF's State Senate Roster and State Assembly Roster.
