New "Proposition Song" and Music Video Debuts on Facebook, YouTube

Nonpartisan sing-along song helps voters learn about propositions at www.calvoter.org

Sacramento, CA – Voters looking for help sorting out California’s eleven ballot propositions have a new tool at their fingertips. “The Proposition Song” is a three-minute, nonpartisan music video now playing on the Web, Facebook and YouTube. The song describes each of the eleven measures and the video displays the lyrics to the song while it plays, encouraging viewers to “sing along”.

“This election season, voters could really use a song,” said Kim Alexander, president of the California Voter Foundation (CVF), the nonprofit organization that released the video today. “We hope our new “Proposition Song” gives voters an entertaining and informative alternative to the negative campaign advertising filling our state’s airwaves.”

Alexander wrote the song’s lyrics, which are set to a traditional folk melody, and recruited five musician friends to sing and perform it with her. They recorded the song at Capital Public Radio’s downtown studio on October 3rd and performed it at several Sacramento establishments. All project participants volunteered their time and talent.

Originally inspired by the “Schoolhouse Rock” series of the 1970’s, this year’s Proposition Song is the fourth produced by CVF, which also released songs for the 2000, 2006 and 2010 elections. The California Voter Foundation also produces and publishes on its web site the nonpartisan California Online Voter Guide, with extensive information about each proposition, state and federal candidates, and voting in California.

The song and video can be accessed the following ways:

On the Web – www.calvoter.org/covg

On YouTube – search for “Proposition Song 2012”

On Facebook – www.facebook.com/calvoterfdn

“This project is truly a labor of love,” Alexander said, noting the song has “a short shelf life”. News organizations and radio stations that wish to broadcast the song are encouraged to make use of it for their election coverage; already several stations are incorporating the song into election programming. The song is available for free on CVF’s web site in an mp3 format. Lyrics and chords are also provided. High-resolution video and audio files are available to the media upon request.

The California Voter Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c) 3 organization working to improve the election process to better serve the needs and interests of voters. CVF’s 2012 voter outreach and education projects are supported by the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation.
