Statement in response to resignation of CA Secretary of State
Davis, CA -- In response to the resignation today of California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, California Voter Foundation president Kim Alexander issued the following statement:
"Kevin Shelley's leadership on voting technology reform earned him admirers and detractors across the nation. He was one of the first election officials in the country to acknowledge the need for transparency and accountability in computerized voting.
His endorsement of the voter verified paper trail and his insistence that California's voting equipment be certified set new standards for California election security. His reforms were embraced by the California Legislature, which unanimously approved a bill last year to implement a voter verified paper trail requirement.
While serious questions remain about his management practices, there is no question that Kevin Shelley provided much-needed leadership to reform California's voting systems at a crucial point in the modernization process."
The California Voter Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization promoting and applying the responsible use of technology to improve the democratic process. More information about CVF is online at www.calvoter.org.
