January 22 is California's Voter Registration Deadline

Californians who have moved, want to change political parties or are first-time voters must complete a voter registration form by Tuesday, January 22 in order to participate in the Presidential Primary election on February 5.

"The voter registration deadline is fast approaching and Californians will not want to miss out on this historic opportunity to participate in the Presidential primary," said Kim Alexander, president of the California Voter Foundation (CVF), a nonpartisan organization promoting voter education and engagement.

According to figures compiled by the Secretary of State, about 15.5 million Californians are currently registered to vote, comprising two-thirds of those eligible to vote in the state. An estimated 7.5 million Californians are eligible to vote but not registered.

The rules for participating in the Presidential primary contest vary by party. California voters who wish to cast ballots in the Republican, Libertarian, Green or Peace & Freedom parties' primaries must be registered to vote with those parties. The Democratic and American Independent parties will permit independent, "Decline to State" voters to participate in their primary elections.

Voters may check their registration status by contacting their county election office. A roster of the 58 county offices as well as CVF's nonpartisan California Online Voter Guide are at http://www.calvoter.org.

Voter registration forms are available in libraries, post offices, and Department of Motor Vehicle offices and must be completed, signed and postmarked no later than Jan. 22 to participate in the February 5 election. Forms can also be returned in person to county election offices.
