New Proposition Song and Music Video Debuts on YouTube

Nonpartisan song helps voters learn about propositions

Sacramento, CA - Voters looking for help sorting out California's six propositions on the November 4th ballot have a new tool at their fingertips.

"The Proposition Song" is a three-minute, nonpartisan song and music video now playing on YouTube, Facebook and the California Voter Foundation's (CVF) web site. The song briefly describes each of the six measures and the video displays the lyrics so viewers can sing along.

"Getting prepared to vote isn't easy," said CVF's president Kim Alexander. "Although there are only six statewide measures on California's ballot, they are complicated and confusing. Voters can use a little extra help. Our song also provides an entertaining and informative alternative to the negative campaign advertising filling voters' mailboxes and the airwaves."

Alexander wrote the song's lyrics, which are set to a traditional blues melody, and recruited four musician friends to sing and perform it with her. They recorded the song at Capital Public Radio's downtown studio on October 16th and performed it at Old Ironsides. All project participants volunteered their time and talent.

Originally inspired by the "Schoolhouse Rock" series of the 1970's, this is the fifth "Proposition Song" produced by CVF, which also released songs for the 2000, 2006, 2010 and 2012 elections. The California Voter Foundation also produces and publishes on its web site the nonpartisan California Online Voter Guide, with extensive information about each proposition, state and federal candidates, and voting in California.

The song and video can be accessed the following ways:

News organizations and radio stations that wish to broadcast the song are encouraged to make use of it for their election coverage. "The Proposition Song" is available for free on CVF's web site in an mp3 format. Lyrics and chords are also provided. Higher quality video and audio files are available to the media upon request.
