Hearing Monday, 9/14 at Crest Theater in Sacramento re Redistricting Regulations
September 10, 2009
Hi Folks,
This coming Monday, September 14, the Bureau of State Audits will hold a public hearing to take testimony on the proposed regulations the agency has drafted to implement Proposition 11, the redistricting reform initiative passed by California voters last November.
The hearing is taking place at the Crest Theater in downtown Sacramento, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. A hearing notice and information about parking and directions is available from the Bureau's redistricting web site, http://www.bsa.ca.gov/redistricting.
Over the past few months, I've been working with a number of people from a variety of voting and civil rights organizations to review the draft regulations and make suggested improvements. We will be delivering our recommendations via public testimony as well as a letter which will be available online shortly after the hearing. Overall, I am very impressed with the diligence and careful consideration that has gone into creating the regulations - many of the provisions in the initiative are unique and complex, and from the regulations drafted and the memoranda that accompany them, it's clear that the Bureau of State Audits staff have invested a great deal of time and thoughtful attention into drafting the regulations.
I will keep you posted as the process develops and look forward to seeing many of you in Sacramento at Monday's hearing. If you'd like more information about California's redistricting reform, please visit the new section on our web site, http://www.calvoter.org/issues/votereng/redistricting/.
Have a great weekend,
