CALIFORNIA LEGISLATIVE RACES

ASSEMBLY AD 41 |
SENATE DISTRICTS SD 02 |
The California State Legislature is made up of two houses -- the Senate and the Assembly.
The Senate is the upper house and is comprised of 40 representatives. Each Senator
represents about 800,000 people. There are 80 representatives in the Assembly, which
is the lower house. Each Assembly member represents about 400,000 people. As of December,
1998, all Senators and Assembly members will receive an annual salary of $99,000.
An Assembly member is elected to a two-year term, and is limited to serving three
terms. Senators are elected to four-year terms and are limited to serving two terms.
California's legislative districts are "nested", so that two Assembly districts
comprise one Senate district. The California Voter Foundation has compiled information on each of the 80 California Assembly races and 21 State Senate seats up this year. (Half of the Senate seats are up for election each year -- this year the even-numbered seats are up, in addition to the special election in Senate District 9). Follow the links to find a list of the candidates running in each district, their party affiliation and contact information. You will also find links here to candidates' web sites, which typically feature campaign literature, endorsement lists, position papers, and information about how to contribute or volunteer. Additionally, this guide features links to profiles of every legislative district, providing demographic, political and community information. These district profiles were written by political science students at the University of California at Davis, in partnership with the California Voter Foundation. Also available are political district maps, produced by the University of California at Berkeley's Institute for Governmental Studies. If you're not sure which district you live in, the California Voter Foundation has compiled some information to help you find out. You can also search this voter guide by a candidate's name to find out which district they are running in. Visit the California Voter Foundation's Internet Guide to California's Legislature for more information about the legislative process, searching for bills on the Internet, and other helpful resources. |
