Supervisorial Races
California has 58 counties, each of which is governed by five supervisors (except for San Francisco, which has eleven). County supervisors are responsible for overseeing county government programs, such as hospitals, welfare and jails. The number of people represented by each supervisor varies by the population in each county: California's smallest county, Alpine, has 1200 residents, with each supervisor representing 240 people, while California's largest county, Los Angeles, has 9,230,600 residents, with each supervisor representing 1.8 million people. Supervisorial salaries also vary by county.
Each supervisor is elected to a four-year term, and the contests are staggered so that no more than three seats come up at one election. Supervisorial contests are non-partisan; if no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the primary election, the top two vote getters proceed to a run-off in the November election. The list below, provided by the California State Association of Counties, identifies those counties that are having run-off contests this Fall.
