State Assembly Races

The California State Legislature is made up of two houses; the Assembly is the lower house, and is comprised of 80 representatives. Each Assembly member represents about 400,000 people, and receives an annual salary of $75,600 (members who serve in leadership positions earn between $83,160 - $90,720). An Assembly member is elected to a two-year term, and is limited to serving three terms. California's legislative districts are "nested", so that two Assembly districts comprise one Senate district.

The 1995-96 legislative session marked the first time since 1970 when Republicans took control of the California State Assembly. Many State Capitol insiders are watching the Assembly races closely to see if the Republicans will maintain their control over the lower house in the 1997-98 session. Several Assembly districts are targeted by both parties as "contested," which means that the major-party candidates running in those districts are likely to receive strong financial and non-monetary support from legislative leaders and powerful interest groups. If you live in one of these targeted districts, you are likely to receive more mail and phone calls from the campaigns than those who live in districts that are not targeted by the major parties.

Below is a list of the 80 State Assembly districts; each file contains a list of the candidates running in each district, their party affiliation and contact information. You will also find here links to candidates' web sites, which typically feature campaign literature, endorsement lists, position papers, and information about how to contribute or volunteer.

If you're not sure which district you live in, the California Voter Foundation has compiled some information to help you find out. Links to other web sites featuring additional information and resources about the State Assembly races are also available.
