Loretta Sanchez on Education
"In today's world, providing our children with a quality education is the only
way our nation can remain competitive in a global economy.
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is committed to making our schools the best they can
be. Currently, California schools rank 49th in the Union. Sanchez believes that as
one of the richest states of the Union, we should be able to provide the best for
our children.
As a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, Congresswoman
Sanchez is dedicating her time in Congress to providing better education to our children
-- our future. Currently the Committee is working on the Elementary and Secondary
Education Act (ESEA). The act deals with all the various educational issues Loretta
believes to be important such as teacher training, technology, student testing and
our investment in our nation's public schools.
Congresswoman Sanchez has also supported legislation to increase schools' control
over their resources. Through H.R. 800, state and local governments will have greater
flexibility in the educational structure. Furthermore, each area will be able to
mold programs in a manner that is the most intelligent for their schools, instead
of going by some overly generalized national plan. Sanchez believes this will be
an instrumental step in bringing the educational state of California back 'on track.'
Reducing class size is one of the best ways to help solve our educational problems,
according to Congresswoman Sanchez. Large classrooms are incapable of providing students
with the one-on-one attention they need. The more attention and direction a teacher
can give a student, the higher the chances are that the child will succeed in today's
highly competitive world. Smaller class sizes are also essential for safe and secure
schools. Teachers cannot watch for the warning signs of violence or behavior problems
when they are overwhelmed with too many students.
Another concern in our community is the well being of students on their way to and
from school. Loretta has fought to make sure that schools can spend federal funds
on pedestrian and bicycle safety education. She wants all our children to arrive
at school safe and ready to learn.
The Congresswoman also promotes school bonds because they help our schools become
stronger. Not only do bonds make new and improved school facilities possible, but
bonds also generate local jobs to build those schools. It will also allow for taxpayer
dollars to go directly to the school instead of through a long-winded federal method.
Finally, during her visits to more than 100 schools, Loretta has heard first hand
from teachers and administrators how essential preschool or Head Start programs are
in enabling students to enter school prepared to learn. Head Start is a comprehensive
program that includes social services, health care and child development to assist
children from low-income families. Loretta is a proud graduate of the program and
she credits the program with giving her confidence in herself. This is why she believes
that Head Start gives all kids an opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background.
Social structures should not prevent any child from becoming the best he or she can
be.
Sanchez is at the forefront of education revolution and fights for what is best
for our children, our community, and our future."
Loretta Sanchez on Jobs & the
Economy
"Coming from a successful professional business background, Congresswoman Loretta
Sanchez is hard at work for businesses in the 46th Congressional District. She is
a leader in the development and redevelopment process of this region. An area ready
for an economic boom, Sanchez is committed to help with the development process.
Congresswoman Sanchez supports H.R.10, which not only ensures modernization of financial
institutions, but also helps all aspects of the business sector be competitive on
the international market. H.R.10 will help attract more business into our community.
In addition, Congresswoman Sanchez believes strongly in the development of our software
industry. Currently, the field is too heavily restricted to allow the industry to
grow and be globally competitive. Hence, Sanchez advocates for the export controls
on encryption to be reduced and is a sponsor of H.R.850, the SAFE Act, which will
accomplish this goal.
Sanchez also believes that products developed within the United States should be
protected at the highest level. She is a sponsor of H.R. 1907, which expedites the
patent process to be sped up. This will allow for more product protection in a timelier
manner. Currently, the window of opportunity available between the filing of the
patent and approval leaves enough room for others to copy the product, which hurts
our economy.
An alternative tax cut proposal has also been a part of Congresswoman Sanchez's goal
in Congress. Sanchez supports tax cuts given permanently to R&D credit, marriage
penalty tax relief, and education tax credits for the construction of schools and
high-tech training. With our current budget surplus the Congresswoman is looking
for retirement of our national debt and an 'affordable' tax cut. If a tax cut is
to be made the Congresswoman wants to make sure that it will not take money away
from ongoing government programs, such as social security.
Congresswoman Sanchez is taking these effective measures to help Orange County be
a strong and competitive area for business."
