Calvoter.org Nominated for 2002 Webby Award

Davis, CA -- The California Voter Foundation's web site, www.calvoter.org, has been nominated for a 2002 Webby Award in the Politics category. The site is a free, nonpartisan clearinghouse of information and resources about California elections and the organization's digital democracy projects.

The nomination marks the third time calvoter.org has been nominated for a Webby. The site was also nominated in 1997, the first year of the Webby Awards, and again in 1999, when calvoter.org won the Webby Award in the Politics & Law category. The Webby Award recognizes outstanding web sites based on content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and overall experience.

"It is a great honor to be nominated again for a Webby Award," said Kim Alexander, president and founder of the California Voter Foundation (CVF) and co-editor of the calvoter.org web site, first published on the Internet in 1996. "Calvoter.org was online at the beginning of the web revolution. During the dot-com invasion our site stayed true to the idea that the Internet is a place where information can be shared in an affordable, effective, and noncommercial way. Though many dot com sites failed, nonprofit sites like ours continue to flourish online."

The calvoter.org web site receives hundreds of thousands of visits each year, with usage peaking during election time when California voters log on in droves to access CVF's California Online Voter Guide, first published in 1994 as a "gopher" site and now in its eighth edition. This year, In addition to producing the voter guide, CVF is also working on several innovative features for the site such as the Archive of Campaign Promises, Initiative Watch, and resource pages informing the public about voting technology and online disclosure of money in politics.

In addition to the 1999 Webby Award, calvoter.org has received many other honors. In 1999 the site was inducted into the Smithsonian Institution's Permanent Research Collection on Information Technology at the National Museum of American History. In 2000 calvoter.org was named the best state election web site by Campaigns & Elections magazine.
