$19.7 Million Raised for and Against California Propositions Thrugh 2/16/02
Davis, CA -- Research compiled by the California Voter Foundation shows that campaigns for and against the six propositions on tomorrow's primary election ballot raised nearly $20 million through February 16th, the end of the last full campaign finance reporting period.
Proposition 45, which would amend California's term limit law, is the most expensive statewide measure on the ballot so far, followed by Proposition 42, which would restrict the use of transportation taxes, and Proposition 40, a bond act that would finance clean water and parks projects.
"Interest groups are pouring millions into California's proposition campaigns," said Kim Alexander, CVF president. "But the overall amount of money raised to support and oppose propositions is far less than what we've seen in past elections," she added, noting that campaigns for the eight measures on the November 2000 ballot had raised $120 million at the close of the last reporting period prior to that election. "Less spending on initiatives may be contributing to less visibility overall for this election, and may help explain predictions for a low voter turnout on Tuesday," said Alexander.
The largest three donors on the six propositions are the Democratic State Central Committee of California, which has donated $3.3 million to support Prop. 45; the Nature Conservancy, which has donated $2.5 million to support Prop. 40; and the California Teachers Association, which has donated $1.5 million to defeat Prop. 42.
CVF's web site, at http://www.calvoter.org, provides summary figures for the total amount raised, spent, and cash on hand by campaigns for and against the six measures through February 16. CVF's Top Ten Donors Lists were first published over the weekend, and were recently updated to include late contributions raised through March 1, 2002.
