RE:   What's Happening at CVF

Thanks for the helpful feedback on our beta-test for our new CVF-NEWS listserve. We may have a few bugs to still work out, and appreciate your patience. Please remember that you can now subscribe and unsubscribe yourself to CVF-NEWS -- just follow the instructions at the bottom of this email message.

Now that I know this is working, I'll fill you in on what's been happening at the California Voter Foundation. We've been busy the past few months working a new project, the Digital Sunlight Awards. Next Tuesday, December 7th, we'll be launching the awards and publishing a major report on the status of digital disclosure in all 50 states on our Digital Sunlight web site (www.digitalsunlight.org). We'll be issuing a news advisory on Monday, and a release on Tuesday, which will provide much more information about this exciting new project. In the meantime, mark your calendars and watch your email boxes for the big announcement!

CVF's staff was also busy over the past few months attending to some exciting personal business. Our managing director, Saskia Mills, is the proud mother of a beautiful little girl, and is on maternity leave until the end of the year. And I was on leave during October in honor of my wedding festivities! For those of you wondering, the answer is yes, I am keeping my name, and yes, my husband is in the new media business too :).

In Other News....we are putting together our plans for our 2000 Online Voter Guide, and CVF will once again be providing all kinds of great election information on our web site. The voter guide will debut in late January, 2000. Throughout 1999, we've also been monitoring the development of California's new electronic filing and Internet disclosure program, and, given all the great work the Secretary of State's staff has been doing over the past year, I'm confident the new program will be a big success.

We are raising funds to support our programs next year, and have so far raised $100,000 of the $200,000 we need to fund our programs, operations and 2.5 staff positions. We were recently awarded a two-year, $90,000 grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to support our work monitoring California initiatives and publishing voter information online. CVF's 2000 budget is also supported with a grant from the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation. We appreciate this support, and hope we can count on yours, too! We are still recruiting charter members for our new membership program. For just $35, you too can become a proud member of CVF. Please visit www.calvoter.org/membership if you would like to sign up and become a member -- it's fast, it's easy, and it definitely makes a difference!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday, and will be writing again soon with news on the Digital Sunlight Awards!
