RE: $285 million raised by statewide campaigns

Hi Folks,

The California Voter Foundation tracked campaign contributions made to statewide candidates and ballot measure campaigns throughout the 1998 election. Our research shows that a total of $90 million was raised by statewide candidates between January 1 - November 3, 1998. In addition, a total of $195 million was raised by November 1998 ballot measure campaigns. Below is a summary of how much each statewide campaign raised.

These figures include all contributions received by the campaigns through October 17, and late contributions (in amounts of $1,000 or more) received between October 18 - November 3, 1998. (Contributions below $1,000 received after October 18 won’t be disclosed until January 31, 1999, when campaigns must file their year-end reports). These figures do not include money raised for 1998 Primary ballot measures, or by statewide candidates defeated in the Primary.

As you’ll see in the figures below, much of this money (in fact, 82%) went toward the Governor’s race ($58 million) and Propositions 5 ($96 million), 9 ($41 million) and 10 ($39 million).

In addition, CVF’s lists of the Top Ten Contributors to every statewide candidate and ballot measure campaign are available and updated through November 3. Also available is the 1998 California Campaign Contribution Database, produced in partnership with Compaq’s Network Systems Lab in Palo Alto, where you can search all contributions made to statewide campaigns between July 1 - Nov. 3, 1998. These resources are available at:

A special thanks is due to Saskia Mills and Casey Elliott for their dedicated work in compiling CVF’s summary data and Top Ten Contributors lists, as well as Compaq’s David Jefferson and Glenn Truitt for their tireless efforts in constructing and maintaining the contribution database. CVF’s 1998 “Follow the Money” project was also made possible with the help of Prof. Geoffrey Wandesforde-Smith and political science students at the University of California, Davis, and with financial support from the Columbia Foundation, the Gerbode Foundation, the Pew Center for Civic Journalism, the Rockefeller Family Fund and the Piper Fund.

The California Voter Foundation’s campaign finance data is available for republication, with attribution to CVF. The 1998 California Campaign Contribution Database will be updated one final time after the year-end reports are filed on January 31, 1999.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
