RE:   Election returns on the net; districts to watch

Hi Folks,

CVF has compiled a directory of web sites featuring election returns on the Internet, which you can find on our web site at http://www.calvoter.org/2000/general/results.html.

Here's a short summary of the various resources for watching returns online:

* Local -- Local election results will be available online in 40 of California's 58 counties, including all of the largest. This is five more counties than provided online returns during the March 2000 primary election. These sites will feature returns for local candidates and measures, and will be updated frequently throughout the evening. Visit CVF's results page (url above) for links to each of these county election agency sites.

* State -- The Secretary of State will again provide live election returns on its web site for all eight statewide propositions as well as for all presidential, congressional and state legislative candidates in California. Statewide returns will be available after 8pm at http://vote2000.ss.ca.gov/Returns.htm.

* Nationwide -- For online election returns in other states, CVF recommends Web White and Blue 2000 at http://www.webwhiteblue.org. Web White and Blue's State-by-State Directory of Election Information, compiled by CVF staff, includes links to online returns in 33 states across the country.

For the latest nationwide returns and maps of electoral votes, CVF recommends the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com), CNN (http://www.cnn.com) and National Journal's The Hotline (http://hotlinepolitics.com).

Links to all of the above resources will be available through CVF's election results page or voter guide home page at http://www.calvoter.org/2000.

Finally, below is CVF's list of "Districts to Watch", which we first put out to CVF-NEWS a few weeks ago, and which identifies the major party candidates in the most contested districts along with their party affiliation. This list will also be featured as a link from our election results page. Complete lists of candidates are available through our online voter guide.

Happy Election Day!
