Below is an Election Alert to help New York voters prepare to participate in the New York primary, rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25.
There are millions of people eligible to participate in Tuesday's mayoral election -- while some may have bigger concerns on their minds, others may want to make a special effort to exercise their right to vote at this time. Unfortunately, information about the rescheduled election is in short supply. So the California Voter Foundation put this Election Alert together and we are hoping our newsletter subscribers will pass it along to anyone you know who might find it useful. Thanks!
New York Election AlertThe New York mayoral primary as well as other municipal elections are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 25. Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
The primary election was originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 11 but was postponed following the attack on the World Trade Center. A list of changed polling sites is available from the New York Times (registration required).
The attack in New York left many computer systems damaged, and the city's election web site is not accessible as of 9/23. However, the city's telephone hotline for voters is functioning, and several other web sites are up and running, providing New York voters with information about the rescheduled election and the candidates running for office.
Here's a round-up of resources for New York city voters:
On the phone:212-VOTE NYC -- voter hotline for the city elections department. Staffed from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday; after hours voters can still use the automated phone information service to look up their polling place and get other information. There is also a toll-free number, 866-VOTE-NYC -- if one is busy, try the other.
212-854-9900 -- voter help line provided by the New York Public Interest Research Group and Common Cause/NY, open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Callers can learn about their voting rights or report problems at the polls.
On the web:http://www.vote.nyc.ny.us -- the city's election web site, currently inoperable due to power problems (the technical staff is working to get the site back online as soon as possible).
http://www.elections.state.ny.us -- New York State Board of Election's web site, features a PDF document with official details on the rescheduled elections.
http://www.gothamgazette.com/searchlight2001/ -- the Gotham Gazette is a project of the Citizens Union Foundation. Their feature, "Searchlight on Campaign 2001" has lots of updated information about the mayoral election, including news articles and candidate statements.
