* Web White & Blue State-by-State Directory Update

Yesterday we launched a new State-by-State Directory of Election Information, available online at http://www.webwhiteblue.org/directory. We had a few reports this morning that some people had trouble accessing this directory using Internet Explorer. The problem's been fixed, and if you had any trouble today visiting the new directory please try it again. There are now 32 states featured in the directory, which will be complete with all 50 states by the end of the month.

* California Online Voter Guide to debut Sept. 28

The CVF staff is hard at work putting the final touches on CVF's new California Online Voter Guide, scheduled to debut September 28. The guide, now going into its seventh edition, will feature web site addresses and contact information for all 525 state and federal candidates in California, as well as detailed information about California's eight propositions, including lists of the Top Ten Donors for and against each measure. Stay tuned, and remember that in the meantime you can use CVF's November 2000 Election Preview and Initiative Watch 2000 to access helpful info right now, available at http://www.calvoter.org.

* California's Easy Reading Voter Guide Debuts

Another popular voter guide, available in print and on the web, is the Easy Reading Voter Guide, created and produced by Susan Clark with funding from the California State Library. This guide is designed to give new and experienced voters alike an easy-to-read overview of the presidential candidates and ballot measures. The online guide also features helpful information about registering to vote, choosing a party, and casting a ballot, and offers material in Spanish as well as English. Check it out at http://www.easyvoter.org.

* CVF in the News -- NY Times, Washington Post

Yesterday Washingtonpost.com published an excellent story about Internet voting that provides a good overall assessment of recent developments in this field. A few weeks back, the New York Times published a story by Rebecca Rainey about efforts by commercial political sites to use the Internet to register voters. Links to these news stories and more can be found on our "CVF in the News" page at http://www.calvoter.org/news/news.html.

* California FPPC Commissioner Karen Getman profiled in LA Times

Karen Getman, chairwoman of California's Fair Political Practices Commission, was profiled in the Sept. 17 edition of the Los Angeles Times. The Q&A story, authored by Cynthia Craft, provides a great overview of Getman's leadership at the commission, which is responsible for enforcing California's political disclosure and campaign finance laws. For those of you curious about the FPPC, this story provides a good introduction to this important state agency and its chairwoman - http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/20000916/t000087795.html.

* Presidential Candidates Agree to Debates

The waiting is over! The two major party candidates have agreed to debate each other in a series of debates that begin October 3. Here's the schedule:

- First presidential debate: Tuesday, October 3, Boston, MA

- Vice presidential debate: Thursday, October 5, Danville, KY

- Second presidential debate: Wednesday, October 11, Winston-Salem, NC

- Third presidential debate: Tuesday, October 17, St. Louis, MO

For more details about the debate formats and the criteria used for determining debate participants, visit the Commission on Presidential Debates' web site at http://www.debates.org.

* Alliance for Better Campaigns launches GreedyTV.org

To highlight the growing problem of reduced TV coverage of American politics, the Alliance for Better Campaigns, along with several other nonpartisan organizations, has launched GreedyTV.org. This new web site provides a clear picture of which TV stations profit the most from political campaign advertising and which stations have agreed to offer at least five minutes of election coverage each night in the 30 days prior to the election, plus much more, including info on how to get involved with efforts to increase TV coverage of elections and politics. Check it out at http://www.greedytv.org.

That's all, folks! Have a great week.
