RE:   Follow the money -- CA Governor's Race

Hi Folks,

We have just posted lists of the Top 25 contributions to candidates for Governor on the CVF web site!

Visit http://www.calvoter.org/2002/ and click on the "Top 25 Contributions" link to view the largest contributions to California Governor Gray Davis, and his prospective Republican opponents, Secretary of State Bill Jones and Bill Simon. The Top 25 lists reflect the largest donations received by these candidates during the first six months of 2001. (Note that contributions from Richard Riordan, another leading candidate for governor, are not yet available because his disclosure reports aren't due until the next reporting period).

Yesterday was the due date for reports covering fundraising activity during the first six months of 2001. As I mentioned in yesterday's CVF-NEWS, we and others are having trouble accessing this data from the Secretary of State's campaign finance web site, CAL-ACCESS. We have been fielding calls to our office from reporters and others looking for help navigating the Secretary of State's site and locating the contribution data, so we have reposted the top contributions on our web site to make this important information more accessible to more people.

Here's an example of what you'll find:

* Top 3 Contributions to Davis:

$100,000 -- Robinson, Calcagnie & Robinson, 04/05/01
$50,000 -- CA Association of Professional Scientists PAC, 03/30/01
$50,000 -- CA Medical Association PAC, 05/24/01

* Top 3 Contributions to Jones:

$50,000 -- Ann Lee Harris, 06/22/01
$50,000 -- Sierra Tel Communications, 05/18/01
$25,000 -- CA Casualty Management Co., 06/28/01

* Top 3 Contributions to Simon:

$286,331 -- William E. Simon, 06/29/01
$120,000 -- William E. Simon, 2/28/01
$100,000 -- Frank Baxter, 04/17/01

We'll have more analysis and details about contributors and their cumulative contribution amounts as we get closer to the March 2002 primary.
