RE:   July 17 Net & Politics workshop - UC Davis

You are invited to attend a workshop I'll be leading on Saturday, July 17th at UC Davis' Political Campaign Management Institute, from 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

The institute, now in its 15th year, provides training to political candidates and others who want to learn how to be effective in the political process. My workshop, titled "The Net and the Next Wave of Political Activism" will explain how to use the Internet to build a successful, grassroots political campaign. Specifically, participants will learn what to feature on a campaign web site, how to publish an electronic newsletter, and how to use the Internet as a tool to enhance other outreach efforts, such as paid & free media, volunteer organizing and "word of mouth" advertising. Other topics we'll discuss include how to raise money, reach younger voters, and respond to a political attack via the Internet.

The institute runs from Friday, July 16 - Sunday, July 18, and the cost for the entire weekend is $545. However, the university has allowed me to invite up to 20 guests to my workshop at no charge. Members of the California Voter Foundation will have first priority for these guest slots. To become a CVF member, visit http://www.calvoter.org/membership, and complete our online membership form. For your convenience, you can
now pay your CVF membership fee (minimum $35) with your credit card over the Internet, using Politics Online's Instant Online Fundraiser service. Just visit our membership page, complete our online form, and follow the instructions.

If you would like to attend my workshop, please rsvp via email by sending your name and a brief message to info@calvoter.org by July 15th.

Learn cutting-edge political campaign techniques and
more at 15th annual institute from University Extension

Those running for office, planning a ballot measure or seeking to increase the political effectiveness of their organizations can learn how to win by enrolling in the 15th Annual Political Campaign Management Institute that takes place Friday-Sunday, July 16-18, at UC Davis. The institute is sponsored by University Extension, the professional education and training provider of the campus.

This comprehensive three-day program covers the essential elements of all campaigns, tips for avoiding common mistakes and current political trends. The institute faculty consists of some of the nation's most skilled political experts, an elite team with one goal - to help participants make the most of their campaign resources.

The program opens on Friday with a special presentation by Art Torres, chair of the California Democratic Party and former member of the California Senate and Assembly. He addresses the future of "California Politics as We Enter the New Millennium." The same topic is discussed during two Saturday panel presentations by media representatives and political consultants.

The agenda also includes presentations on the critical elements of every campaign: strategy and tactics, organizing, fundraising, research and communications, along with small-group sessions designed to accommodate participants' specific goals and levels of experience. Among this year's choices are three hands-on workshops, providing opportunities to develop key aspects of a campaign plan. Other sessions highlight activism and new technology, and grassroots techniques in organizational advocacy.

This institute is a complete educational experience for those taking the first step into electoral politics, as well as for those taking the next step in their political careers. It is ideal for first-time candidates, elected officials seeking higher office, issue managers, campaign staff, community activists and organizers, campaign consultants, union executives, political attorneys and advocates, public affairs and communications professionals, business and nonprofit leaders, educators and anyone considering greater involvement in electoral politics.

In addition to Torres, speakers and panelists include Kim Alexander, president of the California Voter Foundation; Professor Ed Costantini, UC Davis Department of Political Science; Murray Fishel, founder of America's first graduate program in campaign management, president of Grassroots Political Campaigns and a trainer with the Midwest Academy; Derek L. A. Hackett, political and fundraising consultant for candidates and organizations in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York; Allan Hoffenblum, principal of Allan Hoffenblum and Associates, a full-service political consulting firm; Jack Kavanagh, host of California CapitolWeek for KVIE Channel 6 (PBS), a political television program that can be seen throughout California; Ray McNally, president of McNally Temple Associates, one of California's most successful Republican political consulting and public relations firms; Jeff Raimundo, national public relations and news media relations consultant for Townsend Raimundo Besler and Usher; Dan Smith, political writer and deputy capitol bureau chief for The Sacramento Bee; and Kevin Spillane, managing partner of The Stonecreek Group, a political consulting and public affairs firm with expertise in general consulting, media, strategy and research.

The 15th Annual Political Campaign Management Institute takes place on Friday-Sunday, July 16-18; Friday, 1-7 p.m. (registration begins at noon), Saturday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The $545 fee includes all instruction, course materials, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and refreshments. Group discounts are available. For additional information or to enroll, call toll free (800) 752-0881.
