Hi Folks,
I was in New York last week for a voting technology public forum sponsored by a dozen voting and civil rights groups. It was a fantastic event, with over 120 people attending. The crowd included civil rights and disability advocates, members of election reform groups, and government and elections officials from all levels of government. Not surprisingly, many in attendance also serve as pollworkers and the audience was highly engaged in the discussion.
The forum focused both on New York's implementation of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and also the question of whether new voting machines for New York State would bring "promise or peril". I argued the "peril" side of the question, explaining why voters deserve the right to inspect a paper back up of digital ballots. Jim Dickson, representing the American Association of People With Disabilities argued the "promise" side, explaining how computerized voting would bring the right to cast a secret ballot to disabled and blind voters and arguing against the need for a voter verified paper trail.
