TO: CVF-NEWS FROM: Kim Alexander DATE: May 6, 2003 RE: RE: Upcoming California HAVA hearings - May 8, 9 and 15
Hi Folks,
If you've got something to say about how California implements the requirements of the new federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA), the time to speak up is now.
The California Secretary of State is gathering input through public hearings and written testimony this month to help shape California's initial plan for HAVA compliance, currently scheduled to be completed in June.
There are five public hearings scheduled throughout the state; two have already been held (one in Los Angeles on May 2, and another in San Diego on May 5). The remaining locations and dates are May 8/San Francisco, May 9/Fresno, and May 15/Sacramento (which I will be attending).
The Secretary of State's web site features a new section dedicated to HAVA implementation, online at:
http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/hava.htm
Here you will find eight "Fact Sheets" that focus on HAVA mandates such as the creation of a computerized statewide voter registration database, new voter identification requirements, new voting systems standards, and voter education. A draft of the initial plan is also available.
The members of California's HAVA State Plan Advisory Committee were announced May 1st by California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley. In his news release announcing the formation of the committee, Shelley said "I am determined that HAVA will be implemented in a way that ensures we reverse the trend of low voter participation and that we reconnect citizens to the political process through the ballot box." A roster of the advisory committee members is at:
http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/hava-members.html.
If you are unable to attend the hearings but still want to share your views about how California should address the new federal mandates or how federal HAVA dollars should be spent in California, you can email your comments to: hava@ss.ca.gov or send a letter via US mail to California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, 1500 11th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 .
