Hi Folks,

The National Commission on Federal Election Reform will hold its second public hearing, this one to focus on election administration, on Thursday, April 12th at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

The California Voter Foundation will be well represented at the event, with CVF President Kim Alexander testifying on civic participation, and CVF board member David Jefferson speaking about Internet voting.

A live webcast of the hearing, which begins at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time, will be available on the Commission's web site at http://www.reformelections.org. Check the site in advance for instructions on accessing the webcast and to make sure you have the necessary software. A video archive of the first hearing, held in Atlanta, Georgia on March 26th, should be available on the site soon.

For more information about Thursday's event, please see the Commission's press advisory below. The public is invited to attend, and seats are on a first come, first serve basis. If you are a member of the media and are interested in attending, the Commission asks that you pre-register (information at the bottom of the advisory.)

The National Commission on Federal Election Reform Goes West to Further its
Work with a Second Public Hearing

The National Commission on Federal Election Reform, led by former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, will hold its second public hearing at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, on April 12, 2001, beginning at 10 a.m. Following a productive first hearing on March 26 chaired by Carter at which legislative issues were explored, this hearing will focus on election best practices. Secretaries of State will offer perspectives on election reform from the field. Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chair of the Democratic Caucus's Special Committee on Election Reform, and others will offer insights on citizen participation. New voting technologies will be showcased. It furthers the Commission's work to issue recommendations this Fall for pragmatic, bipartisan and politically viable election reform.

The hearing is open to the public and will feature four panels of distinguished Americans who will share their views on a wide range of election reform issues. To date, the participation of the following speakers is confirmed:

This public hearing in Simi Valley is the second of a series of public hearings at presidential libraries across the country. Two more public hearings remain:

- May 24 at the Lyndon B. Johnson Library in Austin, Texas;
- June 5 at the Gerald Ford Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Former President Ford to preside)
