Happy new year! I hope everyone's new year and new millennium is off to a good start.
The vote counting problems in Florida have given rise to new efforts to improve voting technology in California and nationwide. There are several important public hearings and events coming up that I'll be participating in and want to let CVF-NEWS subscribers know about in advance in case you are interested in attending.
In addition, this evening California Governor Gray Davis will deliver his annual State of the State, and some details about how to tune in are also featured below, as well as some other upcoming Cal Channel programming relating to California's energy crisis.

Secretary of State hosts Election Technology Expo in Sacramento

Sponsored by Secretary of State Bill Jones and co-sponsored by Assemblyman John Longville, this day-long event will include three morning panels featuring numerous election and technology experts, as well as an exposition of various voting systems that will be open until 3 p.m. I'll be participating in the third panel of the day, from 10:45 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., titled, "Emerging Technologies in Elections", moderated by Alfie Charles and also featuring Wes Gullett of the McCain 2000 Web team and Trudell Een of the League of Women Voters' "Smart Voter" web site.
Assembly Elections Committee to hold two-day voting tech hearing

Sponsored by the Assembly Elections & Reapportionment Committee, this two-day informational hearing will bring together county election officials, voting technology vendors, state agency staff and election experts to discuss California voting procedures, computerized and touch-screen voting, and Internet voting.

Upcoming voting technology debate at the National Press Club

This debate is co-sponsored by George Washington University's Cyberspace Policy Institute and and GW's Democracy Online Project's National Task Force, co-chaired by former U. S. Representatives Patricia Schroeder and Richard White. The debate will consist of two panels that will examine voter registration, vote counting, and vote recounting in light of the confusion surrounding voting in election 2000.

Gray Davis to Deliver State of the State today
This evening California Governor Gray Davis will address both houses of the Legislature to deliver the annual State of the State. The event will likely last about one hour and will be broadcast live on the California Channel. While cable companies that carry Cal Channel generally end the station's broadcast at 3:30 p.m., this evening carriage is likely to be extended on many stations to accommodate the Governor's address, which begins at 5 p.m. If you can't watch the address on TV, you might try the Internet -- either the Cal Channel web site, at http://www.calchannel.com, or the newly-redesigned State of California web site, at http://www.ca.gov. Many public radio stations are likely to carry the broadcast live as well.
Cal Channel to broadcast historic utility deregulation hearings on Jan. 9
I just checked out Cal Channel's schedule for this week and tomorrow, Tuesday January 9, they are rebroadcasting an August 25, 1996 conference committee hearing at the State Capitol on Electrical Industry Restructuring. The hearing rebroadcast begins at 9 a.m., and is followed at 3 p.m. by a press conference on Electric Industry Reform that was held on the same day back in 1996. Anyone interested in learning how we got to the crisis we're in today would benefit tremendously from watching these two important, historic events. Thanks to the California Channel for using its resources in such a beneficial way!
