PHIL ANGELIDES - BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Phil Angelides, the Democratic nominee for Treasurer of California, is
an experienced businessman and financial manager whose career has
demonstrated that public problems can be met effectively with creative
solutions.
Whether bringing major employers such as Apple Computer to his
community, or uniting and energizing the California Democratic Party
during its most successful year ever -- his accomplishments have been
marked by energy, vision, leadership and effectiveness.
Angelides, 41, is a graduate of Harvard University and a Coro
Foundation Fellow, and served for eight years in California government.
His last public position was as Chief of Staff to the Assembly Majority
Leader.
While in the public sector, he gained a reputation as a leader in the
housing and land use field and played a key role in protecting tenants'
rights, creating programs to build low and moderate income housing,
helping to finance needed public facilities, and strengthen state and
local urban planning.
He entered the private sector in 1984 and formed his own company,
River West Developments, in 1986. River West quickly earned a reputation
for economic success and innovation, as it led the way in setting the
standard for mixed-use communities. Its environmentally-responsible new
town, Laguna West, has been featured in Time, Newsweek, the New York
Times, U.S. News & World Report and ABC-TV's "Good Morning, America."
Angelides recently formed a new venture that helps businesses reduce
their energy costs and consumption.
In 1991, Angelides was elected as Chair of the California Democratic
Party, a position he held until April 1993. He assembled an impressive
unity campaign that inspired California voters, registered an historic
1.2 million new Democrats, built a force of 50,000 volunteers, and raised
the largest amount of funds ever.
He led the United Democratic Campaign to unprecedented victories in
1992, from the presidency to the election of two new Democratic U.S.
Senators and across-the-board victories in Congressional and legislative
races.
He placed special emphasis on bringing young people back into
California politics by creating the Presidential Student Corps,
registering nearly 60,000 college students in six weeks, and quadrupling
the number of young people serving as delegates to the California
Democratic Party Convention.
Angelides has always been active in the civic life of his community.
He is a former Chair of the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment
Commission, and has received numerous awards for community service,
including "Sacramentan of the Year" from the Sacramento Board of
Realtors, and the "Regional Pride Award" from Sacramento Magazine.
Together, he and his wife Julie have committed time and funding to a
diverse group of organizations including Resources for Independent
Living, the Urban League, the California Abortion Rights Action League,
the Sacramento Food Bank and Homeless Havens, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Phil and Julie, both Sacramento natives, reside in their hometown with
daughters Megan, 16; Christina, 10; and Arianna, 5.
