DIMARCO BLAMES SCHOOL BOND FAILURE ON ELECTION-YEAR POLITICS
Sacramento -- Maureen DiMarco, candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction, today criticized the State Legislature for failing to act responsibly to help build new schools and repair deteriorating classrooms.
"Frankly, I was shocked at the Legislature's failure to -- once again -- do what they said they were going to do," said DiMarco. "It's really election-year politics at its worst when the interests of our schoolchildren are put aside in favor of partisan bickering."
"When Delaine Eastin and her Democratic colleagues in the Legislature linked the school bonds with the prison bonds, the bill was doomed to fail. People got too involved in their own politics -- pitting the school bonds against the prison bonds. There just wasn't enough goodwill." continued DiMarco.
"Once again, it was politics first and kids last," said DiMarco.
"As Superintendent of Public Instruction, one of my top
priorities will be to work with the Legislature, the Governor and local communities to develop a comprehensive program for funding badly-needed school facilities," stated DiMarco.
The number of students in California's schools now tops 5.5 million and is growing by 100,000 every year. Just to keep pace with enrollment growth, 19 new classrooms need to be built every day, including weekends and holidays.______________________
