Maureen DiMarco
Candidate's Statement

I have been an outspoken advocate of children's issues for over 20 years, first as a parent volunteer in the classroom, then as an elected member of a local school board, and now as California's first Cabinet Secretary for Child Development and Education. From first-hand experience, I know what it takes to restore excellence to our schools.

As we stand on the brink of the 21st century, public schools must change to keep pace with the challenges facing society. Parents need more choice in choosing a school and in how those schools are run. Schools must be safe havens for learning, free from drugs and violence. And, we must focus our priorities and dollars away from the bureaucracy -- and back into the classroom.

The time has come to launch the next wave of educational reform and recognize that the Legislature and labor unions don't create good schols -- communities, local school leaders, teachers and parents do.

I am not a career politician. I am a parent who is committed to making California schools the nation's finest. Please join with me to meet this vital challenge and give all our young people the quality education they deserve.
