FULL RIGHTS FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL &
TRANSGENDERED PEOPLE
Gloria La Riva for Governor Campaign
Gloria La Riva is the gubernatorial candidate of the Peace & Freedom Party (PF&P), a ballot-status party in California since 1968. PF&P is a progressive and socialist alternative to the big business Democratic and Republican parties. PF&P strongly supports full rights for lesbians and gay men.
As hundreds of communities around the country march in celebration of lesbian and gay liberation, they will pay tribute to the Stonewall Rebellion. This historic and militant rebellion of lesbians, gay men, and transgendered people in June of 1969 provided a legacy of struggle seen in the demonstrations against Anita Bryant and Jerry Falwell, and in the AIDS movement fighting unresponsive and bigoted governmental and healthcare institutions. These struggles have brought to the forefront the issues of domestic partnership, civil and parenting rights, discrimination and violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people. The Gloria La Riva for Governor campaign stands in solidarity with this rich history of struggle.
La Riva is also a leading organizer of Workers World Party (WWP), a country-wide socialist organization. As a WWP member, La Riva has linked the struggle of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people to the struggle for a just society free of racism, sexism and exploitation. She has marched against Reaganite anti-gay legislation, demonstrated against FDA policies on AIDS, organized against the Nazi David Duke's gubernatorial campaign in Louisiana and marched at Lesbian and Gay Pride rallies in California and in Washington, DC.
In 1991, Gov. Wilson vetoed the state lesbian and gay rights bill. La Riva is for the immediate implementation of equal rights legislation for lesbians and gays. As governor, she would fight for domestic partner rights legislation. In 1994, both Wilson and Democrat Kathleen Brown are blaming immigrants for the state's economic crisis. La Riva opposes immigrant bashing and calls for full social, economic and political rights for immigrant workers.
La Riva for Governor is more than an election campaign. Whichever candidate wins in November, the struggle for domestic partner rights, more funding for AIDS research, treatment and education will not end. The fight for decent jobs, quality education, housing, and healthcare will continue. More struggles like Stonewall can stop the attacks on poor and working people led by the bosses and their representatives in the Governorps office and the legislature.
La Riva for Governor calls for jobs, housing, healthcare, childcare and education for all. This can be achieved by taxing the big companies which have feasted off of California for so long. PG&E, PacBell, Southern California Edison, McDonnell-Douglas, Dow, Bank of America, McDonald's, and many others have made hundreds of billions in profits while destroying much of this state and exploiting millions of workers. It's time they pay for the crisis they have created.
